Mining is the most important activity, next to agriculture and the most economic activity in the life of any nation in general but mineral rich countries in particular. The mining has been identified at the same time as a matter of serious concern because of its impacts on human and the environment. Mineral exploration and processing cause a number of environmental damages such as air pollution, biodiversity loss, water pollution, soil erosion, and soil pollution. It can also result in the formation of sinkholes. The acidic water released from some metal and coal mines release acidic water which on percolation acidifies the groundwater. Nonetheless, the mining is important for human civilization and we therefore need to introduce some effective control measures for pollution control. Thus, there is a need of the hour to opt for environment friendly mineral exploration and processing. The researchers have been working in this direction to develop innovative clean technologies for sustainable mining. The clean coal technologies such as coal gasification in surface and underground reactors, novel catalysts and hydrogenation etc. have been attempted in order to avoid harmful emissions. Considering the importance of the research reports from mining sector for the protection of environment and health, this special issue of the Current World Environment has been proposed.

The prospective themes of the issue broadly are given below-

1. Mining of Mineral resources

2. Mine waste management

3. Mining and Reclamation

4. Mining hazards

5. Mine safety science

6. Geo-engineering

7. Mining impacts on the society

8. Control measures for over exploitation of mines

9. Clean technologies of minerals extraction and processing

10. Environmental restrictions together with scientific mining
